Verstappen could not convert pole to victory on Sunday as McLaren's resilience once more showed their title credentials.
Lando Norris secured a monumental victory at his home British Grand Prix today, triumphing despite relentless weather and drama at Silverstone.
The 25-year-old Englishman, supported by a jubilant crowd, took full advantage when teammate Oscar Piastri was handed a controversial 10‑second penalty for erratic braking under the safety car, dropping him to second and elevating Norris to the top step of the podium.
In a storm‑hit 52‑lap sprint, the win marked Norris’s fourth of the season and his first on home soil.
McLaren’s double top finish also served notice that their resurgence is far from a one‑off as they stretched their lead at the championship standings.
Piastri furious at stewards’ intervention
)
Piastri had appeared on course for a clean sweep, overtaking Max Verstappen early on and controlling the race until the safety‑car restart.
His penalty came after he suddenly braked on the Hangar Straight, causing Verstappen to take evasive action, a move the stewards judged “dangerous”.
McLaren’s camp, particularly Piastri, voiced their discontent, arguing that the timing of the SC lights’ deactivation was unclear, yet the FIA stood firm.
The 24-year-old Australian served his penalty during the final pit stop and, despite a spirited chase, could not reel in Norris, eventually finishing 6.8 seconds adrift.
With Norris cutting Piastri’s lead from 15 to just eight points, McLaren have firmly injected themselves into the title battle.
Norris now boasts back‑to‑back wins and four overall this season, signalling the opening phase of what promises to be a McLaren‑Red Bull duel down to the wire.
Hulkenberg ends 239‑race podium wait as Verstappen struggles under hectic conditions
)
Nico Hülkenberg etched his name into the history books by securing a podium in only his 239th start—a record‑breaking moment for both driver and Sauber.
Starting from the back row, clever tyre strategy and impeccable driving in the rain vaulted him into third.
His performance was hailed as a career milestone.
Pole‑sitter Max Verstappen struggled on intermediates and low downforce, eventually spinning at a restart and plummeting to fifth.
Lewis Hamilton salvaged fourth for Ferrari after sliding off late in the drying conditions, while Pierre Gasly, Lance Stroll, Alex Albon, Fernando Alonso and George Russell rounded out the top ten.
