The retired UFC heavyweight champion finds himself on the ropes after explosive police footage surfaces from a February crash incident.
Jon Jones, widely regarded as one of the greatest fighters in UFC history, is once again battling controversy — but this time, it’s outside the octagon.
According to TMZ Sports, footage from a February 21 traffic stop in Albuquerque, New Mexico, shows a man, believed to be Jones, allegedly threatening a police officer while appearing to be heavily intoxicated.
What Happened?
)
The incident began when the Albuquerque Police Department responded to a car crash and questioned an unidentified woman found in the passenger seat of a wrecked vehicle.
Strangely, the woman appeared to be intoxicated and was reportedly without trousers at the scene.
In the video obtained by TMZ, the woman handed her phone to the police officer, stating that UFC star Jon Jones was on the other end of the line.
A man, who strongly resembled Jones by voice, is heard speaking with the officer in a rambling, seemingly drunken manner.
)
Alarmingly, the man said, "My brothers, they kill people for way less."
The officer, clearly concerned by the nature of the statement, immediately called for backup.
The situation intensified as officers conferred about the phone call.
"I got threatened over the phone," one officer is heard saying in the footage.
The police later called the man back for a follow-up conversation before launching a thorough investigation into the incident.
On June 17, following weeks of inquiry, Jones was charged with a misdemeanour offence for leaving the scene of an accident.
Jones' camp responds to allegations
)
Jon Jones’ attorney, Christopher Dodd, was quick to issue a scathing response to the charge.
In a statement to TMZ Sports, Dodd vehemently denied that Jones was driving or even present at the scene on the night in question.
"Jon was not driving that night; he wasn't in the car," Dodd declared.
"It appears that an intoxicated woman used a false allegation against Jon to avoid being arrested for DWI, and the police fell for it."
He further accused the police of harbouring ulterior motives, adding, "The only thing I can think of is that the police were targeting Jon for improper purposes. We will get to the bottom of it and make sure that this baseless case is dismissed."
Jon Jones' glittering career before his retirement
)
Before his recent legal troubles, Jon "Bones" Jones built a reputation as one of the most dominant fighters in the history of mixed martial arts.
His career was decorated with record-breaking achievements, making him a near-unanimous pick for the greatest of all time (GOAT) in UFC circles.
Jones became the youngest champion in UFC history when he won the light heavyweight title in 2011 at just 23 years old.
Over the years, the 37-year-old defended his belt against some of the most formidable names in the sport, including Daniel Cormier, Alexander Gustafsson, and Lyoto Machida.
His technical brilliance, reach advantage, and fight IQ made him nearly untouchable in the octagon.
Despite his success, Jones' career was repeatedly marred by run-ins with the law, doping violations, and suspensions.
Nonetheless, he made a triumphant return in 2023 when he claimed the UFC heavyweight title before Dana White recently confirmed his retirement officially.
Jon Jones is expected to appear in court on July 24 for a hearing that could see yet another twist in the ongoing saga surrounding the embattled UFC legend.
