Benjamin David Simmons is an Australian-born professional basketball player who plays for the Brooklyn Nets in the NBA.

2. David Simmons' age

David Simmons was born on 20 July 1996 and he is presently 27 years old and was born in the Fitzroy neighbourhood of Melbourne. 

3. David Simmons parents

Dave and Julie Simmons are the parents of Simmons. His mother is a white Australian, and his father is an African-American exile who naturalised as an Australian citizen.

Melissa, Emily, Liam, Sean, Olivia, and the first four from his mother's previous marriage made up the group of siblings he grew up with. 

In 1989, his father turned pro, playing for the Melbourne Tigers in Australia's National Basketball League after graduating from Oklahoma City University in the United States.

5. Lifestyle

Liam, the brother of Simmons, left his role as an assistant coach at the University of California, Riverside in 2018 so that he could help Simmons hone his shooting technique.

It wasn't without debate or criticism that he decided to appoint his brother as his shooting coach. Michael Bush, a former NFL player, is the spouse of his sister Emily, a 2014 graduate of Washington State University's women's rowing team and current employee of Klutch Sports.

David Patrick, who is currently the head coach at Sacramento State, was his godfather and spent his only season as an assistant coach at LSU.

In 2016, a hit-and-run driver in New Jersey killed Simmons's cousin, who had been present during the NBA selection.

6. Youth Career

Simmons moved to the United States in January 2013 and he went to Montverde Academy. He assisted Montverde in overcoming a 16-point deficit to defeat St. Benedict's of New Jersey 67-65 in the High School National Tournament championship game in April 2013.

He returned to Melbourne after playing in the Jordan Brand Classic International Game, and in June 2013 he signed on with the Bulleen Boomers of the Big V league.

Simmons chose to commit to Louisiana State University on October 14, 2013, turning out offers from Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, and other universities.

Simmons signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball for LSU on November 12, 2014. Simmons was announced as the East team's starting lineup for the 38th McDonald's All-American Game on January 28, 2015.

He was announced as the 2015 Morgan Wootten Award winner on March 10, 2015. This award is given to the finest male McDonald's All-American player who demonstrates exceptional character and leadership and represents the ideals of being a student-athlete in both the community and the classroom.

7. College career

Simmons started his undergraduate career with the LSU Tigers on a four-stop national tour of Australia as a freshman.

After coming back to the States, Simmons won the SEC Preseason Player of the Year award, was selected for the Associated Press preseason All-America team, and appeared on the 35th-anniversary cover of the Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook.

His Preseason Player of the Year honour made him just the second freshman to earn the award, joining Kentucky's Julius Randle in 2013, and his All-America team honour made him just the fourth freshman to be honoured on the preseason team.

In the first game of the LSU season, Simmons made his college debut, going for a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds while starting in a victory over McNeese State.

8. Professional career

David Simmons began his professional basketball career at the Philadelphia 76ers in 2016 after being drafted as their number one overall pick. 

He joined the 76ers for the 2016 NBA Summer League after signing his rookie scale contract. Despite his poor shooting performance in his first three Summer League games, Simmons was commended for his court awareness and big-man passing ability.

During the 76ers' final training camp scrimmage, Simmons twisted his right ankle. Simmons broke the fifth metatarsal bone in his right foot, and an MRI and X-ray of his foot and ankle revealed the injury. As reported by CBS Sports, Simmons was ruled out for the remainder of the season.

Tests indicated that his fractured right foot had not fully healed, and he was sidelined for the entire 2016–17 NBA season.

After spending seven years with the Philadelphia 76ers, Simmons moved to the Brooklyn Nets in 2022.

In exchange for James Harden and Paul Millsap, he was moved to the Brooklyn Nets along with Andre Drummond, Seth Curry, and two future first-round picks.

He made his Nets debut against the New Orleans Pelicans, putting up four points, five rebounds, and five assists before fouling out in a 130–108 loss.

Simon struggled with several injuries since his move to the Brooklyn Nets and has not had a steady season to build on.

9. National team career

At the age of 15, Simmons played for Australia in the 2012 FIBA Under-17 World Championship, where he contributed to the team's silver medal. 

The following year he made his senior debut for Australia in the 2013 FIBA Oceania Championship against New Zealand.

His senior career did not go as he planned it as he withdrew from several international tournaments due to injury and his NBA career.

10. Endorsement deals 

Simmons was included in the 2016 Showtime documentary film One & Done, which explored his and his family's opinions regarding the NCAA's and the NBA's "one and done" rule in addition to offering insight into his time as a one-and-done collegiate player. Nike and Simmons inked a sponsorship agreement.

Simmons is an Australian football league supporter of the Essendon Football Club, an Australian rules football team.

Simmons declared in 2020 that he would support Kamala Harris and Joe Biden in the 2020 US presidential contest.
