The Seville side ended Mourinho's run of major European finals without a defeat after extra-time and penalties.

How it happened

The match was billed as an unstoppable force meeting an immovable object, with Sevilla's Europa League record and Mourinho's European record on the line.

The game lived up to its billing, with both teams struggling to put the other under for the duration of the regulation 90 minutes.

Roma started with purpose and threatened Sevilla early on, but they failed to break them down before the record holders found their footing and started to apply themselves.

Sevilla assumed a position of control, but soft play in the midfield by Ivan Rakitic saw Dybala play through on goal, and the forward made no mistake, finishing past Yacine Bonou.

Roma went into the break in front, but Mendilbar shuffled the pack, bringing on Suso and Lamela in the second half, a move that proved effective, adding sharpness to Sevilla's attack.

Their relentless attacking was rewarded in the 55th minute of the game when Gianluca Mancini turned the ball into his own net from a Jesus Navas cross.

Lucas Ocampos thought he had given Sevilla the chance to go ahead when referee Anthony Taylor pointed to the spot after what looked like a foul on the Argentine. However, following the VAR review, the decision was overturned.

Both teams had chances to grab the win before the end of regular time, but both teams failed to grab their opportunity, sending the game to extra time.

Extra-time and penalty

The extra-time had a similar feel to the 90 minutes before it. Roma could be said to have been better in the first 15 minutes, with Sevilla dominating in the second-half of extra time.

However, neither team managed to nick it, despite a late scare for the record holders when Roma had two set-piece opportunities from dangerous areas.

Sevilla won the toss and played the shootout close to their fans. Both teams scored their first attempts, but Gianluca Mancini failed to answer Rakitic's attempt in the second round of tries.

Roger Ibanez lost the third attempt for Roma, and it meant Sevilla were champions should they score their fourth take.

Gonzalo Montiel stepped up like he did in the World Cup final, but his attempt was saved by Rui Patricio. However, VAR called for a retake as the Portuguese stepped off his line.

The Argentina international made no mistake with his second attempt, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to return the Europa League trophy to Seville.
