However, Mikel Arteta’s troops were beaten to the punch by Galatasaray, who moved quickly to secure the 32-year-old's signature.

The Gunners’ interest in Morata came after they failed to sign Ollie Watkins from Aston Villa.
Watkins was their top target but Villa were unwilling to sell. Arsenal also considered a move for Evan Ferguson but were unable to sign him on loan due to Premier League rules.
Morata would have been a short-term solution for Arsenal but he would have brought experience and quality to the squad.
