Mendes, who famously represented Cristiano Ronaldo up until his move to Saudi Arabia, also tipped Lamine Yamal to win the Ballon d’Or, as his former client did five times, as a way of responding to the claims that the youngster demanded to be Barcelona's highest-paid player.
What Mendes said
The Portuguese football representative was in Barcelona on Thursday to meet with Yamal. According to MD, they rendezvoused at the La Bonaigua restaurant in Sant Just Desvern to discuss his contract renewal.
Yamal, 17, has a contract with Barcelona until 2026. He has not been able to sign for longer because he is not a legal adult. Hence, he is expected to put pen to paper for a long-term deal when he turns 18 on the 13th of next month.
Barcelona’s president, Joan Laporta, revealed that the deal had been agreed in principle, and yesterday, Mendes, mobbed by a mixture of fans and journalists, assented that the teenager would stay at the club, amid interest from outside.
"Of course, he's going to renew; there won't be any problem. He's happy. He'll renew soon, don't worry," he answered succinctly.
There have been reports that Yamal requested to be Barcelona’s top earner during contract negotiations, and the mob outside the restaurant asked the agent about the claim's veracity. While sporting director Deco has previously denied it, Mendes lent credence, saying that Yamal was the best player in the world and would win the Ballon d'Or in response to the question.
"He's the best in the world and he's going to win the Ballon d'Or. Everyone knows that Lamine is the only player who can win the Ballon d'Or. The gap with the others is huge. It's not me who says it, it's everyone else, and Barça knows it too."
