Onana drew criticism for two mistakes in normal time, first conceding at his near post to Charles Vernam’s strike and then misjudging a corner, allowing Tyrell Warren to head in Grimsby’s second goal.

Despite the errors, Amorim refused to blame Onana alone, insisting the loss stemmed from a collective failure.

“With all due respect, when you play against a fourth-division team, it is not the goalkeeper, it is everything,” Amorim said after the match.

“It is the environment, it is the way we face the competition. We know that at the moment, everything people will pay attention to will be everything. It is going to be massive, every detail

“We showed that performance today, so my players spoke, for me, really loud.”

The defeat sees Grimsby Town advance to the next round, while Manchester United face growing pressure after another early cup exit.

The Red Devils must now prepare for the visit of Burnley, where another defeat could ramp up the pressure on Amorim ahead of the international break.
