The fourth division oufit took a two-goal lead into half time before a late rally by substitute Bryan Mbeumo and defender Harry Maguire took the tie into penalties.

Grimsby held their nerves to win 12-11 in the shootout, and condemn the Red Devils to a third game without a win; and a truly disappointing start to the season.

Speaking after the game, Amorim, who made 8 changes to his starting lineup from the 1-1 draw at Fulham, refused to make any excuses for his side's shocking display.

"I would like to say very smart things + very important things. I have nothing to say. Nothing to say.

"That is the biggest problem also. To see the same mistakes + nothing to say in this moment. I’m really sorry for our fans. It’s too much sometimes.”

Despite handing summer signing Benjamin Sesko his first start in a United shirt, Amorim's men failed to offer any kind of sustained attacking pressure or impetus in the opening exchanges, with Grimsby looking more composed, and more clinical.

Andre Onana will also come in for heavy criticism for his underwhelming performance in the Grimsby goals, and in the penalty shootout.

Amorim will now be under immense pressure heading into the weekend's clash against Burnley at Old Trafford, where another defeat could seriously call for questions about his future, especially after spending over 200 million pounds on new signings.
