RFEF approve request to play Barcelona LALIGA match in USA
For the first time in history, a LALIGA match could be played outside of Spanish soil, as the RFEF has accepted the request to play the December clash between Barcelona and Villarreal in Miami.
The details
In recent years, we have seen an increasing number of domestic clashes held on foreign soil. Multiple El Clásico friendly matches have been held in the USA, and the Supercopa De España is now hosted yearly in Saudi Arabia.
The next level was to take actual LALIGA matches to North America, and the league's president, Javier Tebas, had expressed the desire to make it happen.
They have now accelerated the plans, and a LALIGA match could be played in the USA as early as this season, after the first line of approval has been cleared.
According to Sky Sports, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has approved that the league match between Barcelona and Villarreal, slated for December 21, be played in Miami.
The Hard Rock Stadium in Miami is the desired venue for the match, and approval from the RFEF is a giant leap towards its fruition. However, an approval from UEFA is still required, as is one from the host federation, CONCACAF, and the football authority in the USA. FIFA also have to be informed, although an approval from the world governing body is not expressly required.
What does this mean?
Should this clear all points of approval, the match between the Blaugrana and Yellow Submarines could be the tipping of the first domino that would change football as we know it.
More LALIGA games will be played in the USA, and we will soon see Serie A do the same, as the Italian league authorities have also been mulling over the possibility.
The Premier League might be the last top European league to tow this line, as unlike the other divisions, the English top flight is in an excellent financial state. Still, they have also been exploiting the riches in the USA with initiatives like the Premier League Summer Series, which Manchester United won recently.
