Two government-owned clubs Lobi stars of Markurdi and Heartland of Owerri recently relegated from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) are reportedly "doing everything possible" to secure an immediate return to the top flight by attempting to purchase promotion slots from teams that qualify via the Nigeria National League (NNL) Super 8 tournament.
The aggressive approach highlights the intense pressure on clubs, particularly those with state government backing, to remain in the elite division.
What happened
Heartland FC, Akwa United, Sunshine Stars, and Lobi Stars were the four teams that relegated from the NPFL after the conclusion of the 2024-2025 season.
Heartland finished 17th, despite securing a victory over Akwa United, who ended the season in the 18th position.
Heartland of Owerri were previously relegated from the top flight in the 2023-2024 NPFL season.
However, they were controversially reinstated into the NPFL for the 2024-2025 season after the league body "outclassed" (disqualified) Beyond Limits Football Academy's promotion due to rules concerning dual ownership.
Beyond Limits was deemed to have an affiliation with Remo Stars FC, which is already in the NPFL, violating league rules.
This decision allowed Heartland, as the next best-placed relegated team that met the criteria, to take the vacant spot.
Controversial slot purchases for immediate return
An official from one of the relegated clubs, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the strategy to Sports247.
"I can confirm that we are doing everything possible to ensure we play in the NPFL next season. The Governor is determined to address all the internal issues that derailed our progress last season. If we succeed in getting a slot, a new structure and management will be put in place," the official stated.
Another official from a different relegated club echoed similar sentiments, emphasising the state government's strong aversion to their team operating in the lower division.
"Our Governor is not comfortable with the idea of the team playing in the NNL under his administration. He’s ready to commit as much as ₦500 million to buy a slot from any of the qualified teams," the official revealed, expressing disappointment.
The desperate clubs are now closely monitoring the ongoing NNL Super 8 qualification process. The Super 8 tournament, which will determine the four clubs promoted to the NPFL has no date yet.
