Nigerian referees rated ‘among the best’ in the world by football chief
Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) referees have been hailed as “among the best” in the world by the league’s chairman, Otunba Gbenga Elegbeleye, following a review of the 2024/25 season.
Pulse Sports Nigeria reports that Elegbeleye has expressed strong confidence in the referees’ performances and called for continued efforts to sustain and build on the improvements seen.
Nigerian Referees on Par with Global Counterparts
Speaking on the league’s official website, Elegbeleye emphasised the high standard of officiating in the NPFL, comparing it favourably to referees worldwide.
“I’ve travelled around the world and witnessed some shocking officiating decisions, something you hardly see in the NPFL.”
“That’s why I can confidently say our referees are among the best globally,” he asserted. His remarks note a growing recognition of Nigerian referees on the international stage.
Progress Reflected in Continental Appointments
Elegbeleye linked the improvements to rigorous training and professionalism, noting that Nigerian referees appointed to continental competitions have earned positive reviews.
He pointed to the recent Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) U-20 Championship in Egypt, where Nigerian referees played key roles.
“At the U-20 Championship in Egypt, a Nigerian referee was involved, and another has been shortlisted for the upcoming WAFCON. This shows clear progress,” he said, stressing the increasing trust in Nigerian officials at major tournaments.
While acknowledging there is still room for growth, Elegbeleye added the importance of ongoing training and retraining programs to maintain and enhance refereeing standards.
He also called on the media to spotlight positive refereeing performances while holding officials accountable for any irregularities, ensuring the league’s continued development.
This endorsement from the NPFL chairman reflects a broader commitment to elevating Nigerian football, not only through players but also through the quality of officiating that supports the game’s integrity and competitiveness.
