Speaking on their podcast before United's derby clash with Manchester City, Scholes and Butt joked about the physical mismatch between the 5 ft 9 in Martinez and the 6 ft 5 in Erling Haaland.

Butt quipped that Haaland would "pick Martinez up and run with him... like when you see a dad after school running down the road with a little toddler."

However, Martinez delivered a masterful performance in United's 2-0 victory, effectively neutralising Haaland, who was substituted in the 80th minute.

What Martinez said

Martinez insisted the jibes did not provide any extra fuel for his performance. "I don't really care what they say," he stated.

"People always say whatever they want; it’s something that I can’t control. What I can only do is show it on the pitch, and I think today I showed it."

When asked if the comments served as motivation, he was dismissive. "No, nothing. It doesn't give me anything. My motivation is my family, that's it."

The defender claims his motivation comes from his family and not some comments made about him by the public.

Manchester United will now focus on their trip to the league leaders, Arsenal, as they push for Champions League qualification
