Manchester United's dominant Europa League record is underscored by a record they are close to breaking.

Manchester United reached their third Europa League final last night after beating Athletic Club 4-1 at Old Trafford and 7-1 on aggregate—a dominant, free-scoring performance.

The Red Devils have been free-scoring throughout the rest of the competition as well and are now only two goals away from equalling the record for the most scored in a single Europa League campaign.

Manchester United on the verge

Mason Mount’s brace and the goals from Casemiro and Rasmus Hojlund in the thumping of Los Leones took Manchester United's tally for their European campaign this season to 35 goals.

The Portuguese giants set the record in the 2010/11 season under their then-exciting young manager, who is now their president, Andres Villas Boas. They scored 37 goals that campaign and won the competition, beating Braga in an all-Portuguese final.

According to BBC Sport’s Joe Rindl, they are now only two goals shy of the record for most goals scored in a single Europa League season, currently held by Porto.

Good signs for Manchester United

For the chance at the record, the Red Devils, like Porto, will face a domestic rival in the final of the competition set to be hosted in Bilbao.

Tottenham advanced past Bodo Glimt to take the second ticket, but the Red Devils are viewed as favourites. With two goals, Manchester United would match Porto’s record and with more, they would eclipse it.
