Despite their mixed performances for Manchester United, an Old Trafford icon has called for a surprising change in approach regarding the futures of two expensive signings.

Manchester United legend Edwin van der Sar has urged the club to reconsider their stance on Antony and Andre Onana

Both players represented significant financial outlays for United in recent years, costing a combined £129 million, but have not consistently met expectations at Old Trafford.

Unlikely redemption calls for Man Utd flops

Antony's record for United stands at 12 goals and five assists in 96 appearances, a return below the standard expected for such an investment.

Although the Brazilian seemed revitalised at Real Betis in the second half of last season, he may be on borrowed time at Old Trafford.

Despite earlier suggestions that manager Ruben Amorim considered Antony surplus to requirements, Van der Sar has called for his reintegration into the squad.

The retired Dutch goalkeeper then commented on much-maligned Onana, who is let down by costly mistakes despite his impressive distribution skills.

Van der Sar has unequivocally backed the Cameroonian, emphasising his deep understanding of the goalkeeper's quality and confidence that he will overcome his challenges to become a top Premier League performer next season.

“I knew him already for a long time, for four or five years at Ajax,” the ex-United goalkeeper said.

“Sometimes it’s not easy, the performances or the pressure there is, but I’ve seen him play for Ajax and Inter, I’ve seen him play Champions League finals so I’m sure that’s going to be fine for next season.”

“I think there are more areas, other areas, where United should see if they can have better players, but I don’t think the goalkeeping situation needs to be addressed.”

It remains to be seen if the Red Devils reconsider their stance on either, as they have already signed Matheus Cunha from Wolves, are linked with Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo and Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

What’s next for Man Utd?

Man Utd, who have no European exertions next season, return to pre-season next month, aiming to navigate playing just Premier League football with minimal fuss.
