Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes ripped into his teammates and sent a message to the board following their 2-2 draw against Everton to win the Premier League Summer Series in the USA.

Fernandes captained a side that had the Red Devils worst finish in Premier League history—15th, last campaign and was tempted by an offer from Al Hilal but chose to remain at Manchester United amid promises of improvement next season.

The Red Devils showed good signs this pre-season series with victories over West Ham and Bournemouth, but slipped into their old habits against Everton, where they gave up their lead twice and Fernandes was not having it.

What Bruno said

While he admitted that they have taken a step in the right direction, Bruno believes there is still so much room for improvement. Speaking specifically about the game against Everton, he criticised the performance of the players, accusing his team of laziness.

“It's improving, but it's not where we want it to be," Fernandes said, per Express.UK. "It's a game of football; there's always passion there. Whatever happens, happens. There was nothing spicy there; it's normal; it is part of the game.

“It's been positive [the US tour] and it's good to create a bond with the players. We looked a bit lazy today and we need to change that.”

Fernandes then directed his message to the club's leadership, demanding new signings to help them achieve their intended goals this season.

“I don’t want to have a dig at anyone, but I think the club is doing the best they can in terms of all the financial situations they talk about,” he continued.

"I don't know about it; I'm not involved in that. But obviously it was crystal clear we needed more competition for the players that were here.

“We needed more quality to get everyone to step up a bit more and to have more to do to get into the starting line-up. I think that's what the club and the manager are trying to do and hopefully we can get one or two players more to help with that.”

New signings Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha had good showings against Everton, buttressing Bruno's points. The Red Devils are currently working on signing Benjamin Sesko and are in direct competition with PIF-backed Newcastle for his signature.
