I knew we would lose — Amorim makes NEW damning admission about Man United coaching role
Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim recently revealed that he went into many games last season knowing that his team would be uncompetitive and, consequently, struggle.
Historic low under Amorim
The Red Devils hierarchy hired the Portuguese tactician mid-season after firing Erik ten Hag in a bid to change their fortunes; however, they went from bad to worse.
He coached the Red Devils in 42 matches last season and only managed to win 17 of them, the same amount as the number of games he lost; abysmal figures for a club like Manchester United.
They sank to historic lows in the league, finishing 15th and were beaten in the Europa League final by Tottenham Hotspur, which compounded their woes.
What Amorim said
The Red Devils are currently in the USA for pre-season. During a press conference, Amorim was asked how he went home after every unfavourable result last season; however, Amorim argued that going into each game knowing that they would struggle was much tougher.
"To tell you the truth, it's not how I returned to my house after the games; it was how I left to go to the games, because I felt that sometimes we will struggle,” he said, per Goal.
“All the struggles we had in games, I felt it before. That was the hardest part. To go to the games and know that we are not going to be competitive – I was really frustrated.”
Amorim has insisted on maintaining discipline within the dressing room. The likes of Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho, who were axed from the squad, were casualties. He insisted that this will continue to be his policy, and he expects it to yield rewards next season.
"Sometimes, when you are losing, you might think, ‘Let's change the standards a little bit’ for them [the players] to be with me. I didn't – and they saw it," he continued.
“Now they understand when I say something, I will do it. I don't treat the players as babies. But they have rules now, and that can change the way you train. I'm always on top. If you don't train in the right way, I have footage to show you. And I show you in front of everybody."
Ruben Amorim expressed his ambition and hope to remain at the club for many years to come, stating that he wants to spend up to 20 years at the club like Sir Alex Ferguson did.
