Mikel Arteta has asserted that Arsenal's Anfield encounter is about securing their current league position.
Mikel Arteta has stressed that Arsenal's trip to Anfield to face Premier League champions Liverpool is solely about their current campaign, rather than making a statement for next season.
Following their Champions League exit, the Gunners have three league games remaining, starting with a challenging fixture against the league leaders.
Arteta on Arsenal’s ambition before Anfield trip
Despite Manchester City, Newcastle United and Chelsea possibly vying for the runner-up spot, Arteta's priority is securing second place for Arsenal for the third consecutive year.

The Spaniard believes the focus should remain on maximising their points tally in the remaining matches, rather than aiming for a psychological advantage over Liverpool.
“It's about this season, it's about the amount of points that are still available to win at the end, and finishing in the position that we want and we have to do that,” said the Arsenal manager.
“That's how we felt in the manner that we went out [of Europe]. We’re very, very proud, but make sure that we finish the season in the same way.

REPORT: Real Madrid suffer significant Galactico blow in bid to sign Premier League star
Amid interest from Real Madrid, a Premier League club have reportedly begun discussions with a key player over a new contract, keen to ensure said player does not join Los Blancos on a free transfer.
“You cannot win the Premier League, that's clear, but the last 16 days that we have with three games to go, make sure that we make ourselves proud at least to compete and end in the manner that we deserve.”

Arteta also addressed the expected guard of honour for Liverpool, stating it is a deserved sporting gesture for the champions.
“They deserve that,” said the Spaniard. “They've been the best team, they've been the most consistent, and what Arne and the coaching staff have done has been fascinating, it's been really good.
“They fully deserve it, and that's the sport. If somebody's better, you have to approve and accept and try to reach that level.”
