'It's a message of inclusivity' -- Guehi defends 'I love Jesus' message

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi has explained the reason for his controversial decision to customise his rainbow laces with “I love Jesus.”

This past weekend, the Premier League, in their campaign to show support to the LGBTQ community, had the captains of all 20 Premier League clubs spit Rainbow Laces. 

While there was overwhelming compliance, there were two unique cases, both relating to religion. Ipswich’s captain, Jack Morsy, an Egyptian Muslim, opted out in its entirety, as he wore a regular Premier League captain's band during their trip to Forest.

Guehi, on the other hand, wore the Rainbow Laces captain band but customised his, writing “Jesus loves you” on it, with a black felt tip marker. 

He received some backlash for his decision, with some suggestions that he could face reprimand from the Premier League; however, it is now clear he will be suffering no punishment. 

Addressing the backlash, the 24-year-old England international put out the following statement: 

"It was just a message of truth and love and inclusivity. I don't think the message was harmful in any way-that's all I can really say about that to be honest.”

"I believe 100% in the words that I wrote, even what I've just said now it's a message of truth and love, and I hope people can understand that my faith is my faith, and I'll stand by it for the rest of my life."
