Manchester United coach Ruben Amorim expressed his desire to lead the club to glory despite Europa League final defeat to Tottenham.

Manchester United fans will not have the respite of the Europa League after a poor league campaign, as they were beaten 1-0 by Tottenham in Bilbao. Still, Amorim is unwavering in his conviction that he is the man to lead the Red Devils to trophies.

Manchester United are currently 16th on the Premier League log. However, their run in the Europa League was expected to save their season. Hence, there were speculations that Amorim could leave the job—by his choice or the board's—should they be beaten by Tottenham. Before the game, however, he laid the notion to rest, stating confidently that he was in it for the long run.

What Amorim said

The Manchester United boss talked a big game ahead of the final against Spurs, expressing confidence in the team from what he has seen in the training sessions leading up to the game.

“I'm really excited and most important, I'm really confident,” he told Peter Schmeichel for CBS Sports. “I really enjoyed the last two training sessions where the lads were really focused and confident, and they enjoyed the session. So when I have that feeling during the week, I can relax a little bit more in the game day.”

Amorim was determined to beat Tottenham, stating that he wanted to deliver trophy-winning sensations to the club. Hence, Schmeichel asked him if defeat would mean an early exit, despite having a contract until 2027.

While he acknowledged that hiring and firing is ultimately in the board’s purview, he ruled out resignation, stating that he was in his dream job and had no intention of leaving.

“I'm always, I'm always open to any decision of the board, especially when I feel that I don't deliver what's supposed to be, but I'm 100% this is my dream club. I waited for so long to change my club because I just want this club and I'm here to stay if the club wants.”

As stated earlier, they did go on to lose the final after a Brennan Johnson strike in the 42nd minute that came off Luke Shaw’s hand to beat the outstretched Andre Onana.

After the game, Amorim doubled down on his pre-match statement, telling the reporters in the post-match press conference that he would not quit.

“I will not quit. I am confident in my job and I will not change anything," he said, per Fabrizio. “If the board or fans feel that I’m not the right guy, I will go the next day without any conversation about compensation… but I will not quit."
