Hansi Flick's boss defends Barcelona high-line despite defensive problems
Barcelona sporting director Deco has come to the defence of Hansi Flick’s high-line defensive system, expressing his confidence in the German's tactics.
Barcelona’s defensive struggles
Having failed to replace Inigo Martinez, who left for the Saudi Pro League late in the transfer window, Barcelona’s snappy offside trap has failed to be as efficient.
They have not kept a clean sheet in each of their last nine games, conceding 16 goals. They were beaten by PSG in the Champions League, lost the El Clásico to Real Madrid, which left them five points behind on the LALIGA table, and recently conceded three goals in the UCL against Club Brugge.
The defensive vulnerability has invited criticism and calls to change the system. Flick rejected this idea in the last press conference, stating that he would not betray his ideals. His immediate boss has now backed him.
What Deco said
Deco was present at the partial reopening of the Camp Nou after more than two years in which it was closed for reconstruction, where he was drawn into the ‘highline’ debate. “The issue of discussing style is irrelevant,” Deco responded, per Football Espana. “We already know perfectly well where we can improve and the difficulties we face.
“Last season, we also went through some tough times, and we were able to overcome them. By getting players back and regaining our form, staying united and working hard… That’s what we have to do.
“We did it last season, and we’re going to do the same this season. Nothing can change things except hard work and dedication.”
