Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has emerged as a surprise candidate for the managerial vacancy at the bottom club in the English Football League.

Following the dismissal of Mike Williamson on Monday, Carlisle are reportedly weighing up an ambitious approach for Gerrard, according to reports in the British media.

Gerrard, who previously managed Rangers and Aston Villa, recently departed Saudi club Al-Ettifaq after 18 months in charge when he had mixed performances.

However, he left the Saudi club by mutual consent last week and is now back in the coaching market.

With Carlisle languishing at the foot of League Two and five points adrift of safety, the club’s American owners are keen to explore bold options to boost their survival chances.

They believe Gerrard’s experience and leadership could provide the inspiration needed to steer them away from relegation.

Securing a manager of Gerrard’s stature would be a major coup for Carlisle, but it remains to be seen whether the former England captain would be willing to take on the challenge of managing in League Two.

While the chances of a deal remain uncertain, Carlisle’s interest signals their intent to make a statement appointment in their battle to retain EFL status.
