However, future Chelsea player Estevao equalised early in the second half through an impressive strike from the teenager, which caught Robert Sanchez out.
Although the second period was less controlled for Maresca’s team, the winning goal came fortuitously when Malo Gusto's cross was deflected in for an own goal by the Palmeiras goalkeeper, Weverton.
Speaking after the game, Palmer extolled the 18-year-old for his strike and broader performance, noting that his talent was intermittently showcased during the match.
“You can see he's a top player, so we're excited for him [to join us],” said Palmer after the victory.
On his goal, the Chelsea attacking midfielder revealed that the Premier League side worked on that attacking pattern before the game.
"We've been working on it in training,” said Palmer. “I saw the space and I went there [and scored].”
What’s next for Chelsea?
Chelsea will face another Brazilian side, Fluminense, in the semi-final, where they will be reunited with former centre-back Thiago Silva, for a place in the final.
