Drake: How AC Milan owner saved Serie A club from bankruptcy by raising ₦60 BILLION in 2 weeks
Venezia FC narrowly avoided bankruptcy thanks to an unexpected saviour, Canadian rapper Drake.
According to a report from GQ Italia, Drake played a crucial role in mobilizing $40 million (approximately ₦60 billion) within just two weeks to prevent the Venice-based club from financial ruin.
Facing the prospect of relegation to Serie D due to severe financial difficulties, Venezia FC's survival hinged on urgent fundraising efforts.
How Drake saved Venezia FC from going broke
According to the aforementioned outlet, Brad Katsuyama, co-owner of Venezia FC, reached out to Drake’s Chief Brand Officer, Matte Babel, to detail the dire situation of the Italian football club who nearly missed out of the 2023/24 Serie A season.
“Venezia has to raise €10 million in a couple of weeks, and then at least €30 million in a few months, or the club will go bankrupt,” Babel recounted.
With the clock ticking, Drake and his team swiftly organized and executed a fundraising campaign that successfully met the financial target, averting the club's imminent collapse.
Drizzy’s involvement in soccer extends beyond his recent intervention.
Since 2022, Drake has been a minority owner of Serie A powerhouse AC Milan, in partnership with RedBird Capital Partners and NBA star LeBron James.
The famous celebrity duo made a collective investment of $1.31 million into Rossoneri.
While their stake is minority, their influence is no doubt substantial, contributing to strategic repositioning efforts for AC Milan.
