‘Cuenca has stepped in’ - Fulham manager reveals reason for benching Bassey since AFCON return

Fulham manager Marco Silva has attributed Calvin Bassey's recent spell on the bench to the strong performances of his replacement, Jorge Cuenca, emphasising the benefits of internal competition within the squad.

Bassey has been a cornerstone of Fulham's defence, even earning the club's Player of the Season award last year.

He continued his fine form in the first half of the current campaign, forging a solid central defensive partnership with Joachim Andersen.

His departure for the Africa Cup of Nations with Nigeria was expected to leave a significant void. However, Fulham thrived in his absence, with Jorge Cuenca stepping in and performing admirably alongside Andersen.

Silva explains benching Bassey

Silva's decision to keep the Nigerian international on the sidelines has prompted questions, which the manager addressed in a recent press conference.

He praised Bassey's quality but explained that Cuenca's form has earned him his place in the starting eleven.

The manager highlighted that this situation fosters healthy competition, which benefits the team as a whole.

"It's a great thing for the team. I am the first one praising Calvin's impact at the club, a great, great CB. Huge potential to keep growing," Silva stated.

"Cuenca has stepped in & shown his qualities. It's a competition, Cuenca knows the pro he's up against."

Despite Bassey's standout displays for the Super Eagles at the tournament, he has not started a single match for Fulham since his return.

He was an unused substitute against Brighton and played only the final five minutes in the recent loss against Manchester United.

It remains to be seen whether Bassey will be restored to the starting lineup for Fulham's upcoming match against Everton at Craven Cottage. However, given his proven quality, his return to a regular starting role is widely anticipated.
