The Australian footballer had been accused of directing racist remarks toward police officer PC Stephen Lovell following a night out in London.
Kerr cleared after jury deliberation
The 31-year-old Matildas captain was accused of calling PC Lovell “f****** stupid and white” at Twickenham Police Station in January 2023. However, the jury took just over four hours to clear her of any wrongdoing.

Kerr and her fiancée, Kristie Mewis, had been involved in an altercation with a taxi driver after a night out in Mayfair, which led to their arrest.
Believing they were being kidnapped, Mewis broke the cab’s rear window in an attempt to escape. The driver later drove them to a police station, where Kerr allegedly became abusive toward officers.

During the trial, Kerr defended her actions, explaining that she felt threatened and compared the situation to the tragic abduction and murder of Sarah Everard in 2021.

The Australian star claimed she lashed out verbally due to fear and frustration, believing the officer was failing to recognise her concerns.

Despite initial reluctance from the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) to pursue the case, Scotland Yard successfully pushed for charges in December 2023—months after Kerr had represented Australia in the Women’s World Cup.
Following her acquittal, Kerr left the courtroom smiling while Mewis broke down in tears. The couple, who are expecting a baby boy later this year, are now looking ahead to their wedding.

With the trial behind her, Kerr can now focus on her recovery from an ACL injury and her future in football.
