Newcastle began the match on the front foot, pushing aggressively for the opener. However, their efforts were thwarted by Andy Robertson's crucial double block, and then Kelleher saved Burn's header from the resulting corner kick. Burn eventually broke the deadlock in first-half stoppage time, powering home a precise header into the bottom corner to give Eddie Howe's side a 1-0 lead.
This sparked Liverpool into life, but Diogo Jota squandered a gilt-edged chance, blazing wide from just four yards out. Newcastle maintained their slender advantage at the break.
In the second half, Newcastle resumed their attack and thought they'd doubled their lead through Isak, who slotted in from a rebound. However, VAR intervened, ruling out the goal. Undeterred, the Swedish striker eventually made it 2-0 on 54 minutes, slotting Murphy's knockdown into the bottom corner to send the Newcastle faithful into raptures.
Federico Chiesa pulled a goal back for Liverpool, but it proved too little, too late.
