Former Barcelona midfielder Gaizka Mendieta has revealed that the Blaugrana have Alexander Isak on their list of striker targets to replace Robert Lewandowski.

The Blaugrana are expected to sign a striker this summer, with the Polish forward’s contract set to expire at the end of the season.

Many names have been rang out, including Julian Alvarez and Serhou Guirassy. However, Mendieta, who is a member of the Barcelona Legends set to play in Abuja this month, said Isak is also on the list.

The Valencia legend, in a conversation with OLGB, said Barcelona tried to sign Isak before he joined Liverpool. He said the Blaugrana will try again when Lewandowski leaves.

"There was talk in Spain of Alexander Isak going to Barcelona before he joined Liverpool, who are stronger financially,” he said.

"Of course, there will be links between the best strikers and Real Madrid and Barcelona. At the moment, Barca still have Robert Lewandowski, but they'll be looking for his replacement next year and Isak will be looked at.

“He's a great striker; he's been in La Liga already; he knows the competition. His performances last season for Newcastle were amazing. So far, he seems to be settling quickly into Liverpool. Great strikers are never short of offers and opportunities in either the Premier League or, of course, in Spain with the bigger clubs."

Isak and Liverpool

The problem with Mendieta’s comment is that Alexander Isak only recently completed a high-profile move to Liverpool on 1 September 2025, with the Merseyside club paying a British record £125 million to sign the Swedish striker from Newcastle United on a long-term (six-year) contract

The transfer ended a summer-long saga: Isak had publicly frustrated Newcastle by refusing to join pre-season and issuing a statement saying promises had been broken, which helped force the move.
