Falconets coach Moses Aduku expressed confidence ahead of the Senegal clash despite Janet Akekoromowei’s injury as Nigeria chases U20 Women’s World Cup qualification.

Nigeria’s U20 women’s team, the Falconets, remain confident of booking a place in the final round of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers, despite travelling to Senegal without injured striker Janet Akekoromowei.

Head coach Moses Aduku has assured fans that the team is fully prepared to overcome the hosts in Saturday’s third-round, second-leg clash, stressing belief, tactical discipline, and collective effort.

Akekoromowei was forced off in the first half of last weekend’s first-leg encounter in Abeokuta after sustaining an injury and has been ruled out of the trip to Dakar.

What Aduku said

Her absence represents a setback, but Aduku insists the squad has learned valuable lessons from the opening leg.

“We’ve reviewed the match carefully and taken a lot from it. The girls showed great character after a difficult first half. They regrouped, adjusted tactically, and were much stronger in the second half. We created several chances and could have scored more,” Aduku said.

The Falconets coach emphasised the need for balance and focus.

“In Senegal, we must defend with discipline and attack with purpose. The players understand what is at stake, and we will approach the match with determination and belief," he added.

The second-leg encounter will take place at Stade Lat Dior in Thiès, Senegal’s third-largest city, located about 70 kilometres from Dakar.

Match officials confirmed for second leg

Match officials have been appointed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), with Moroccan referee Zakia El Grini set to take charge.

She will be assisted by Karima Khadiri and Ihsane Ennouajeli Nouajli, while Zoulaikha Harmasse will serve as the fourth official. Oumou Souleymane Kane of Mauritania will act as match commissioner, and Alice Kimani of Kenya has been named referee assessor.

Kick-off is scheduled for 5:00 pm Senegal time (6:00 pm Nigeria time). The winner on aggregate will advance to the final qualification round, with the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup set to be staged in Poland in September.
