Sevilla are reportedly close to agreeing on a deal for a new manager in a simultaneous move that will see them sack their current coach.

Sevilla are close to agreeing on a deal with Jose Luis Mendilibar to take over as head coach until the end of the season, according to reports.

The position is set to become vacant as Sevilla are said to be preparing to sack current coach Jorge Sampaoli after a run of bad results that place them only two points above the relegation places.

Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that Sevilla are closing in on the appointment of former Eibar and Athletic Club manager Jose Luis Mendilibar.

Mendilibar enjoyed relative success with Eibar from when he took over at the start of the 2015/16 season until they suffered the ignominy of relegation in the 2020/21 season, leading him to leave the role.

He had a brief unsuccessful spell at Alaves in the 2021/22 season before parting ways after a run of 12 games with a paltry 0.58 points per match.

Sampaoli struggles with Sevilla

Sampaoli was brought in in October to replace Julien Lopetegui, who left for Wolves after a struggling start to the season.

The Argentine manager was tasked with setting Sevilla on the right track, but instead, they struggled further, as they were knocked out of the Champions League and are actively fighting against relegation.

Although Sevilla are still alive in the Europa League and are set for a quarter-final date with Manchester United, they risk playing in the Segunda division next season, with only two points separating themselves in 14th and Valencia in 18th, who have a better goal difference than them.
