Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Chigozie Agbim has expressed strong confidence in Nigeria’s chances of winning the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The 35th edition of AFCON will take place from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026, with Nigeria aiming to secure a fourth title after previous triumphs in 1980, 1994, and 2013.

What Agbim said

Agbim, a member of the late Stephen Keshi’s title-winning squad in South Africa in 2013, believes the current Super Eagles squad has the quality, experience, and mentality needed to succeed.

“Before we won the AFCON in 2013, it had been 19 years since our last title in 1994,” Agbim recalled while speaking to reporters in Enugu.

He added, “Now it is 12 years after that success. I see the potential in this team, and I believe they have the quality to win again. What they need now is the support and encouragement of every Nigerian.”

Agbim also dismissed concerns following the Super Eagles’ 2–1 friendly defeat to Egypt, insisting that exhibition matches do not reflect a team’s true strength.

“A friendly game is always a friendly game. The mentality, attitude, and determination are very different from what you see in competitive matches,” he said via Complete Sports.

He added that losing narrowly to one of Africa’s most successful teams should not cause panic.

“Egypt is one of the powerhouses of African football. Losing 2–1 with limited preparation does not mean the Super Eagles are a bad side,” Agbim noted.
