Nigeria vs Mozambique: He is our No.1 guy — Lookman plays down conflict with Osimhen after on-pitch squabble
Nigeria's Man-of-the-Match against Mozambique, Ademola Lookman, has played down the on-pitch squabble between himself and Victor Osimhen, insisting that the Galatasaray ace was the team's talisman.
The former CAF Players of the Year were both on the scoresheet in Nigeria's dominant 4-0 win against Mozambique. However, the occasion was tainted by the argument between teammates.
What happened
Victor Osimhen's questionable attitude and anger, which led to his reprehensible rant against Finidi George, the Super Eagles coach at the time, were laid bare during the clash against Mozambique.
Despite the team having accrued a three-goal advantage, two of which he scored, Osimhen berated his teammates, Lookman and Bruno Onyeamachi, when they opted to go for goal instead of playing him through for his hat-trick.
Both incidents happened within minutes, and a frustrated Osimhen appeared to have boiled over, engaging in a shouting match with Lookman before being asked to be subbed off.
Lookman plays down incident
Osimhen, clearly miffed, was eventually replaced with Moses Simon. Lookman, on the other hand, went on to grab another assist, setting up Akor Adams.
He was rightly awarded CAF's MOTM for his effort in the game, and in the mix zone, he was asked about the spat with his teammate, and whether they had had time to talk it out after the final whistle
"I've not seen him. But I don't really think it's that important; the team won 4-0," he told reporters. "Vicky is our number one guy. Everyone knows this. He is a top striker, top player, so all of the rest of that is not really important."
