Why we lost to Inter Milan — Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta explains Champions League defeat

The Gunners lost 1-0 to Serie A giants Inter at the San Siro, making it two defeats in five days for the North London side.

Manager Mikel Arteta slammed the referee's decision to award Inter a penalty in first-half injury time.

The spot-kick, converted by Hakan Calhanoglu, came after Mikel Merino's slight handball on the stroke of halftime.

Arteta expressed his frustration to TNT Sports post-match:

"I am very proud of my players, the level of domination we had. We lost because we were very harshly done by, in the sense that it is obvious. Both penalties.

"If you are going to give a penalty, the other one has to be because he punches him in the head.

"There is no deflection, nothing you can do in the box, so can he get away from it? If he is going to give that, the other has to be 100% a penalty."

Despite dominating the second half, Arsenal failed to score. Arteta acknowledged the missed opportunities but praised his team's performance.

"We should have scored a couple at least, but the way the team played, that was us at our best."

A tough defeat for the Gunners, but Arteta will be eager to see his men bounce back for the trip to Chelsea this weekend.
