Barcelona has reached an agreement with Al-Hilal for the signing of Joao Cancelo; however, the fullback has yet to undergo a medical examination, and the move has not been made official.
According to reports, this is an intentional delay on Barcelona’s path. However, the stalling is not because they have changed their minds, as they intend to complete the deal eventually.
Why Barcelona have delayed
According to MD, the Blaugrana have delayed the medicals and unveiling of Joao Cancelo because they do not want any distraction from the ongoing Supercopa de España.
The LALIGA champions are set to play against Real Madrid in the final later today, after beating Athletic Club 5-0 in the semi-final. Victory in the El Clásico today will see Hansi Flick’s side successfully defend the title they won last term.
Per the report, Cancelo’s medical has been scheduled for after the competition in Saudi Arabia, when the focus returns to LALIGA.
Barcelona’s signing of Cancelo
As Pulse Sports reported, Barcelona secured an agreement with Al Hilal to sign Joao Cancelo on a loan deal for the rest of the season, after Inter reached a verbal agreement with the Blue Waves for the Portugal international.
The 31-year-old joined the Saudi-based outfit in the summer of 2024 from Manchester City, and while he still had a contract until 2027, he fell out with head coach Simone Inzaghi, leading to the planned exit.
