In the absence of Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi, Victor Osimhen captained the Super Eagles to a 3-1 victory against Uganda. He led the team exemplarily on the pitch, and off it, he showed captain material by ensuring Raphael Onyedika got the plaudits he deserved.

The Club Brugge midfielder got a rare start for Nigeria in the clash against the Cranes. He grabbed his chance and gave Eric Chelle something to worry about, scoring a brace and controlling the midfield for the Super Eagles.

What Osimhen did

After the game, Supersport reporters attempted to interview Osimhen, and he instead offered Onyedika, insisting that the midfielder deserved the spotlight.

The former Midtjylland star seemed shy and was reluctant to speak to the media, but Osimhen insisted, urging the 24-year-old to enjoy the moment.

“Onyedika has been one of our best players. Most of the time, he doesn't get the hype he deserves. He is a really talented player; for the type of performance he had today, I believe he deserves to be in the spotlight,” Osimhen told reporters.

“For me, it's not about me, it's not about the Super Eagles, it's about him, because the game is done. And he has done so well for the team, and so he deserves to be in the spotlight.

“I wonder why you guys are interviewing me and not him. That's why I brought him to also have a glimpse of what it feels like to…When you have a good performance, you see every journalist wants to speak to you. So I am really happy for him.”
