What 24-year-old star who dumped Nigeria’s Super Eagles for Canada said after UCL winner
Promise David, the 24-year-old forward who chose to represent Canada over Nigeria’s Super Eagles, spoke enthusiastically after scoring the decisive goal that secured a rare Champions League victory for his Belgian club, Union Saint-Gilloise.
The Nigerian-born forward was the hero as Union SG survived the Lions and a lively home atmosphere in a tense Champions League night.
David’s strike came in the second half of Tuesday night’s match at Galatasaray’s Rams Park, delivering a narrow 1-0 win against a side missing their Nigerian star Victor Osimhen, who was expectedly absent due to an injury.
The victory boosted Union Saint-Gilloise’s hopes in the competition, as they held firm against a late onslaught from the home team to clinch three valuable points.
Reflecting after the match in an interview with UEFA.com, David said, “I think it was a good game. We blocked Galatasaray well. They had their chances, too. We got the reward for our good play tonight.”
He also praised the electric atmosphere, adding, “The atmosphere in the stadium was truly impressive. It’s like having extra players. Every player truly wants to play in such an environment.”
Following his match-winning display against the Turkish champions, Galatasaray, David has now scored two goals in five matches in the Champions League this season.
Up next for the forward and his Union SG teammates in the competition will be another difficult clash against Ligue 1 side Marseille, who defeated Premier League club Newcastle United 2-1 in their encounter in France.
