Galatasaray vs USG: No Osimhen, no party as Lions emulate Super Eagles in shock loss
Without Super Eagles star Victor Osimhen, Galatasaray appeared toothless at home, falling to a surprise 1-0 loss to Union St Gilloise.
Nigerian-born Canadian striker Promise David was the hero for the visitors, scoring just before the hour mark to give USG a vital win over Galatasaray, who ended the game with 10-men after Arda Unyay's late sending off.
Galatasaray vs USG: How it happened
Union Saint-Gilloise enjoyed the stronger first half, creating the best early chance when a deflected cross fell kindly to Promise David, who steered his close-range effort narrowly wide.
Galatasaray, despite entering the match on a three-game UCL winning streak, struggled to find their rhythm, though Gabriel Sara came closest for the Turkish side when his long-range strike rattled the right post.
USG responded with their own moment of misfortune as Ross Sykes’ powerful header crashed off the crossbar, leaving the game goalless at the break.
The Belgian side eventually made their pressure count 12 minutes into the second half. Raul Florucz slipped a clever reverse pass into Adem Zorgane, who squared across goal for David to tap in from close range, a moment that came shortly after he avoided a second yellow card.
Galatasaray pressed desperately for an equaliser, but Sara’s header was saved by Kjell Scherpen and Davinson Sánchez fired over from a few yards after a goal-line block fell his way. Their frustration deepened when Arda Ünyay was sent off late on.
The win gives Union SG a major boost in their push for a play-off spot, with three league-phase matches remaining.
