Super Eagles B captain, Junior Nduka has revealed that the team also wants to win the continental showpiece.
The Super Eagles B will begin their 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), Group B encounter against defending champions Senegal.
The home-based Eagles face a stern test on Tuesday, but confidence remains high within the squad.
What Nduka said
Speaking at the official pre-match press conference on Monday, defender Junior Nduka emphasised the pride and determination driving the team.
He said, “To our fellow Nigerians, I know the expectations are high because we have been doing well in sports, and we will try our best not to let them down.
“Our female team has just won the WAFCON, and our women's team just won the basketball title. It's a good record for the country and we hope to consolidate on that,” he said.
Meanwhile, Head coach Éric Chelle, who has led an intense training camp with his squad composed entirely of Nigeria Premier Football League players, made it clear that the focus remains firmly on the opening match.
“I don’t want to talk about Congo or Sudan for now. Our focus is on our first match tomorrow. We want to take it step by step. Right now, it’s all about Senegal,” he said.
The 2024 CHAN campaign comes at a time of resurgence for Nigerian sports, with recent triumphs by the Super Falcons at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) and D’Tigress in the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket, lifting national morale.
