'We want to be the standard' - Excited D'Tigress coach after Nigeria defeated Rwanda
Nigeria's women's national basketball team, D'Tigress, have commenced their 2025 FIBA Women's AfroBasket Championship campaign with an emphatic victory.
Coach Rena Wakama's side secured a dominant 92-45 win over Rwanda in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire, extending their remarkable winning streak in the tournament to 25 consecutive games dating back to October 2015.
What Wakama said
Speaking after the game, Coach Wakama expressed her satisfaction with the win but emphasized the high standards her team sets for themselves.
"It’s a good win for us today and we can only control how we want to perform and for us as a team, we want to be the standard and this is our mindset as a group," Wakama said via Complete Sports.
She acknowledged the unique nature of the current squad, many of whom are playing together for the first time.
She continued "The 2023 team that won the Afrobasket is different from this team and for this team, this is our first game together ever and I understand that as a coach. I am still trying to figure out rotations and the players too are trying to know each other better on the court."
"I must give credit to my girls because they all understand the reason why we are here and we want to remain professional and focused by taking each game at a time."
D'Tigress will look to continue their winning momentum as they face Mozambique in their next game on Monday, aiming for an unprecedented fifth consecutive AfroBasket title.
