The Red Devils suffered an opening season defeat at Old Trafford against Arsenal in a game that could have gone either ways.

The Gunners stole a 1-0 victory despite not being at their best, with Riccardo Calafiori's 15th minute header the difference on the day.

What Fernandes said about Arsenal's goal

Fernandes addressed the Arsenal goal, while speaking to Sky Sports, via Abola, questioning whether Saliba fouled Bayindir from the corner before Calafiori bundled the ball into the net.

"We created some chances but didn't score, that's the negative from today. When our goalkeeper is impeded and can't jump, it's difficult for Bayindir.

"We know that in the Premier League these kinds of fouls aren't often given. Even after the meeting where they said they were going to call more obstructions on players not looking at the ball, it's just talk," Fernandes analyzed.

He was, however, pleased with the overall performance: "It's the first game of the year, we can't talk about steps forward yet. We conceded from a set piece, but Arsenal didn't create any other chances. We created plenty but didn't score, so we have to be better next time. We controlled the game well and were good on the ball."

Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo made their competitive debuts for Manchester United, and the captain had only praise for both, saying they will add even more to the team. "They created a lot, they were in the right spaces. We know they are dangerous and are a threat. We're well aware of what they can bring to the team. It was a good first impression but I'm sure they'll be even better," he observed.

Fernandes also offered a glimpse of what's to come for Man United, praising the Old Trafford faithful: "We have a lot of hope for what we want to do and achieve. There are positive things to take away. I really liked the reaction of the fans at the end. I was very pleased. It was a bigger sign of hope than what we did in the game."
