We are not favourites — Arteta refuses to let Arsenal get carried away by narratives
Mikel Arteta has refused the tag of title favorites for his team, despite the Gunners moving three points clear at the top of the Premier League table following their 1-0 victory at Fulham and Liverpool’s subsequent 2-1 defeat at home to Manchester United.
Since their loss at Anfield in August, Arsenal have gone unbeaten in five successive league games (and eight across all competitions), a run that has seen them increasingly considered the new favourites to win the title this season.
Arteta refuses to call Arsenal title favourites
Speaking to reporters ahead of their Champions League fixture against Atlético Madrid, Arteta acknowledged the speculation but stressed the need for continued focus and humility:
“The only thing I embrace is when I see the team, the energy, the temperature, the commitment, and the quality that they can deliver.
“That gives me the conviction that we can go all the way, but that’s just a feeling, then the next day you have to prove it, and you can’t be busy thinking about those topics.
"There obviously is a lot of narrative after [Liverpool lost to Manchester United].
"Every game in this league is a must-win. We are very appreciative of that, so we don’t get carried away with anything.”
