The 27-year-old has effectively made the Super Eagles' number one shirt having relegated Francis Uzoho to the bench at AFCON 2023.

Nwabali cemented his position in the team after keeping hosts, the Elephants of Ivory Coast, quiet to claim his first clean sheet as Nigeria made history.

The Chippa United goalkeeper made three saves, with his first half striker denying Christian Kouame, who almost put the home side ahead in the first half following a poor defensive header from Zaidu Sanusi.

Nwabali’s save against Kouame has now been named as the save of the day from the lineup of matches played on Thursday by CAF.

"Thank you Stanley Nwabali, for this #SaveOfTheDay," CAF posted on their official account on X.

The superb stop which saw the South Africa-based goalkeeper make himself big as Kouame’s shot came off his thighs to safety highlighted Nwabali’s shot-stopping skills and potential as a possible solution to Nigeria’s goalkeeping problem.

He went on to deny Sekou Fofana and Pepe in the second half, with Nigeria going on to net the decisive winner to take all three points.
