WATCH: Ex-Tottenham star scores wondergoal to seal Belgian title for boyhood club
Emotional scenes greeted the end of the Belgian League’s championship round as ex-Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld scored an incredible goal in stoppage time to win the title for his boyhood club Royal Antwerp.
Antwerp beat Genk and USG to Belgian League title
Antwerp needed to beat Union Saint-Gilloise’s result against Club Brugge on the night to be champions, but they also faced Genk, who could have claimed the league title with a win over Antwerp.
The Reds were trailing by two goals to one going into extra time, while USG were losing to Club Brugge in the other fixture of the day.
Alderweireld wonder goal seals title for Antwerp
Both results at that stage meant that Genk would be crowned champions of the 2022/23 season, but with time running out, Alderweireld changed the direction of the championship title with a vicious swing of his right foot.
An all-time great football moment. Toby Alderweireld joined hometown club Royal Antwerp last summer, as he always promised he would. Tonight, he has won them their first league title since 1957 with this incredible strike vs Genk in the 94th minute! pic.twitter.com/KIysphCZKk

In the 94th minute, with Antwerp running out of ideas, the ball fell to Alderweireld on the edge of the area, and the former Belgium international rifled the ball into the top corner to secure a 2-2 draw for the home side.
Alderweireld redeemed his promise to return to the club where he started his career in 2022, and even he could not have imagined a better ending to his first season back.
The Belgian defender’s goal helped Antwerp to their first top-division league title for 66 years after they last won the league in 1957.
