The 25-year-old scored a screamer in the match and danced around the corner flag to celebrate the goal. The fans at Estádio da Luz were not amused by the display, and they reacted accordingly. Vinicius received a yellow card for the celebration.

Before the game could restart, Vinicius called referee François Letexier's attention to an incident between himself and Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni, in which he accused the Argentine of racist insults. The referee initiated the anti-racism protocol, and the game resumed after about ten minutes.

Reports from after the game, and comments from players like Aurelien Tchouameni, alleged that Prestianni called Vinicius a 'Monkey,' a racially charged insult.

"The CBF stands in solidarity with Vinícius Júnior, victim of yet another act of racism this Tuesday, after scoring for Real Madrid against Benfica in Lisbon," the statement read.

"Racism is a crime. It is unacceptable. It cannot exist in football or anywhere else. Vini, you are not alone. Your decision to activate the protocol is an example of courage and dignity. We are proud of you."

"We will remain steadfast in the fight against all forms of discrimination. We stand by your side. Always."
