Messi’s leveller just after the half-hour mark brought Gerardo Martino’s side level before the break, and the Argentine superstar completed the turnaround in the 67th minute after making the most of Sergio Busquets’s pass.

Neither Messi nor his teammates were done, with Benjamin Cremaschi notching the away side’s third and Luis Suarez scoring their fourth following a Messi assist.

How Messi made MLS history

Apart from the three (two goals, one assist) against New England, the 36-year-old did likewise in the previous gameweek against Nashville on April 20, scored one and set up another when Inter Miami travelled to Kansas City in mid-April, recorded a goal and set up one on April 6 against Colorado and notched a brace against Orlando at the start of March.

Furthermore, Messi becomes the first player in MLS history to hit 16 goal contributions after seven appearances in the regular season.
