The incident occurred late in the game at the City Ground, as the Nigeria international’s midriff collided heavily with the goalpost during the 2-2 draw with their East Midlands rivals.

The surgery was deemed urgent and necessary to address the specific nature of the injury, which can sometimes be fatal. It is understood that the striker's condition is not life-threatening.

The Daily Mail reported tonight that the first phase of his surgery has been completed. He has been placed in an induced coma and is in the intensive care unit.

The completed portion of the operation is believed to have gone successfully; however, the doctors will go back in today to complete the procedure.

Upon the update, football fans across the globe have intensified their prayers and well wishes, which began when Forest first announced that the former Hertha Berlin man would go under the knife. It is unlikely that Awoniyi would return for Forest this season, with only two games left to play. His participation for the Super Eagles in the Unity Cup is also in doubt.
