Atalanta came into the game sitting bottom of the league phase after a 4-0 defeat to reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain on matchday one, while Brugge claimed an impressive 4-1 win over AS Monaco.

There was just one shot on target in the first half, but it was enough to hand Brugge a half-time lead. Having received the ball just outside the area, Christos Tzolis curled a strike into the right side of the net past the despairing Marco Carnesecchi.

Ademola Lookman, making his first start of the season after a turbulent summer, showed some fine touches but failed to make any real impact in the opening 45 minutes.

The second half picked up a little, and Lookman had a cross that turned into a shot, but Brugge keeper Nordin Jackers made a fine stop.

The hosts were given a lifeline when, after a VAR check, Jackers was adjudged to have brought Mario Pasalic down inside the area. Substitute Lazar Samardžić made no mistake from the spot to set up a grandstand finish.

With just three minutes of normal time remaining, Yunus Musah set up Pasaic, who nodded home from point-blank range to win the game for Ivan Juric's side.
