Transfer News: Manchester United defender could join Serie A champions

Napoli have reportedly identified Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez as a potential summer signing.

The Argentine international has faced significant periods on the sidelines due to injury, including a serious knee problem that has sidelined the 2022 World Cup winner since February.

Martinez, 27, made 32 appearances across all competitions last term and was a significant miss for the Red Devils in the run-in and Europa League run to the final against Tottenham Hotspur. 

The Red Devils bolstered their defensive options last summer with the additions of Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt, which could prompt discussions regarding Martinez’s long-term position.

As reported by The Mirror, the recently crowned Serie A champions have added the Argentine to their list of potential summer recruits. 

The Italian club’s sporting director, Giovanni Manna, is reportedly a keen admirer of the defender and is not overly concerned by his fitness record.

Martinez joined the Manchester giants from Ajax in the summer of 2022, but injuries have limited his availability in recent seasons despite a strong debut campaign. 

The former Ajax player is among several options Napoli are monitoring as they prepare to defend their title next season, and the rumoured interest follows their successful acquisition of Scott McTominay last summer, with the United academy graduate proving instrumental in their Serie A triumph.
