The deal is for a fixed fee of €21m plus add-ons and a five-year contract. This move follows a period of deliberation by the club, who also considered a more experienced option in Aston Villa's Emiliano MartÃnez but ultimately chose Lammens as a long-term prospect. The €21m fee makes Lammens Royal Antwerp's record sale.
Lammens, who is yet to make his senior debut for Belgium, has been a standout performer in the Belgian Pro League. His performances for Royal Antwerp last season earned him widespread praise with some experts in Belgium tipping him as a future successor to Thibaut Courtois in the national team.
The Goalkeeper Conundrum
The decision to sign a new goalkeeper comes after a difficult start to the season for Manchester United's current first-choice keeper, André Onana, and his backup, Altay Bayindir.
Onana, in particular, has been criticised for a number of high-profile mistakes since his arrival.
The club’s manager, Rubén Amorim, has publicly acknowledged the pressure on his goalkeepers, stating that it is "hard to be a Manchester United goalkeeper in this moment."
The arrival of Lammens suggests that the club is looking to provide immediate competition and a potential long-term solution to its goalkeeping issues.
