Despite their vast financial superiority, it was Manchester United who found themselves fighting for their lives against Grimsby after going 2-nil down at half. Even after clawing their way back into the match, the Red Devils were eventually knocked out on penalties following Bryan Mbeumo's miss.

How it happened

The Red Devils were stunned after first-half goals from Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren gave the League Two side a two-goal led heading into half-time.

Cameroonian goalkeeper, Andre Onana, in his first game of the season, and amidst fears over his long-term future at Manchester United was culpable for both goals, embarrassingly flapping at a cross for Grimsby’s second goal.

Despite the disappoiting first half, the Red Devils rallied in the second round to avoid the embarrassment of losing in normal time to Grimsby.

Manchester United’s other Cameroonian Bryan Mbeumo scored his first goal to start the comeback, before Harry Maguire’s 89th-minute equaliser sent the game to penalties.

Manchester United were on the verge of overcoming their nightmare evening at Grimsby after Clarke Oduor missed a penalty for the home side, but Red Devils' marquee summer signing, Matheus Cunha, saw what should have been a game-winning effort saved.

After both sides had gone through all their penalty takers in sudden death, Manchester United's Mbeumo was denied at his second attempt, effectively knocking the Red Devils out of the competition.
