FIFA President Gianni Infantino has advocated for an end to Russia’s suspension from international football, stating that the prolonged ban has been counterproductive and has failed to deliver positive outcomes.

Russian national teams and clubs have been barred from FIFA and UEFA competitions since 2022, following the country’s invasion of Ukraine.

The decision, which aligned football with broader international sanctions, effectively excluded Russia from global and European tournaments across all levels.

However, recent developments suggest a possible shift in perspective within international sport. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has recommended that global sports federations explore ways to allow Russian youth athletes to return to competition under specific conditions, a move Infantino appears to support.

What Infantino said

Speaking in an interview with Sky News, the FIFA president criticised the impact of the ban, arguing that it has done little to promote understanding or resolution.

“This ban has achieved nothing. It has only generated more disappointment and hatred,” Infantino said.

The FIFA chief was clear when asked whether he believed Russia should be readmitted to international football.

“We have to, definitely. Because this ban has not achieved anything. Having girls and boys from Russia being able to play football games in other parts of Europe would help,” he stated.

For now, Russia remains suspended from international football, but the FIFA president’s stance signals growing pressure for a reassessment of the ban and its long-term effectiveness.
